Three Restaurant-Quality Chicken Wing Sauces To Make At Home

by Julio Myers

If you're making chicken wings at home, the secret lies in choosing the best sauce. These three homemade sauces will remind you of those served at bars and pizza joints across the country. Whether you prefer sweet or spicy, there's a wing sauce on this list that will please your taste buds. Each recipe makes enough sauce to coat about 3 pounds of wings or 24 individual wings.

Honey Lime

This wing sauce is a favorite among those who don't like their wings spicy. Fresh lime zest gives it a summery kick, while honey adds sweetness and that stick-to-your-fingers appeal.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest
  • 1 pinch garlic powder

Melt the butter in a saucepan. Turn the heat to low, and add the remaining ingredients, stirring until the honey liquefies and becomes emulsified with the butter. Keep the sauce warm until you're ready to use it.

Sweet Thai

This sauce has just a hint of spice; you can add more sriracha sauce if you want it spicier. Sweet chili sauce can usually be found in the ethnic foods section of the grocery store and comes in a small jar or bottle.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry or cherry jam or jelly

Whisk all of the ingredients together in a bowl. There's no need to heat this sauce -- just toss your wings in it when they're done cooking.

Raspberry Chipotle

This sauce is made for those who love spicy wings. A hint of raspberry flavor, which comes from real raspberry puree, takes the edge off.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh raspberries
  • 2 tablespoons dried, ground chipotle pepper
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • a pinch of salt

Press the raspberries through a sieve. Discard the raspberry seeds, but place the juice/puree in a saucepan along with the other ingredients. Cook over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture appears uniform. Keep the sauce warm until you're ready to use it.

If you make chicken wings often, try mixing up a double or tripe batch of any one of these sauces. You can keep it in a jar in the refrigerator, and then just heat up a little in a saucepan when you need it.

And if your first attempt to make your own wings doesn't go as planned but you still want to enjoy this treat, you can always head to your favorite restaurant or sports grill like Luxe Sports Grill to satisfy the craving.
